Why do black-backed jackals go bird-brained? Is it a case of fowl play or a desperate bid to survive in the harsh Kalahari landscape? Food scarcity may be the culprit, but these cunning canines have adapted to the menu, and birds are their bread and butter!

Pecking Order:

  • Doves: The jackal’s feathered favorite, a tasty treat to get their paws on!
  • Sandgrouse: A bird-brained snack, but oh-so-satisfying!

Jackals are opportunistic hunters and scavengers, often preying on smaller animals like birds at waterholes. However, specific statistics on their success rate in catching birds can be difficult to pinpoint due to variations in environment, prey availability, and individual skill.

The jackals hunting success can range between 10% and 20% for small prey items, including birds. This means that out of 10 hunting attempts, jackals might successfully catch a bird 1 or 2 times.

Their overall hunting success rate is relatively low compared to larger predators. They rely heavily on scavenging and opportunistic feeding to meet their dietary needs. Specific success rates can vary based on the availability of prey and environmental conditions, but the general trend indicates that jackals are not highly successful in catching birds consistently.
