Description
Cubitje Quap waterhole in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a unique watering spot and home to a myriad of wildlife species that depend on it for sustenance and survival. Amongst the cunning hunters that prowl the area is the black-backed jackal, a small yet clever predator that developed a unique taste for doves and sandgrouse.
The black-backed jackal is native to sub-Saharan Africa. Despite its unassuming size, these jackals earned a reputation as clever and opportunistic hunters. The diet of black-backed jackals primarily consists of small mammals, insects, carrion. However, those at Cubitje Quap developed a preference for avian delicacies: doves and sandgrouse.
When doves and sandgrouse come to drink or bathe at the waterhole, the jackals observe from the shadows. They have learned to adapt to the behaviours of their avian prey. They wait patiently for the perfect moment to strike, utilising their their excellent stalking skills and keen senses. They strike when the birds are at their most vulnerable, just as they drop their beaks into the water. This moment of distraction is all the jackal needs to launch a swift and silent attack.
This picture called “Missed opportunity” was taken at Cubitje Quap waterhole at 500mm, 1/3200, f8, iso 640.
