On 31 August 2023 skywatchers around the world were treated to a spectacular celestial show, the Super Blue Moon.
Understanding the Super Blue Moon
1. Supermoon – A supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in its orbit. The proximity makes the moon appear larger (about 14%) and brighter (about 30%)  in the night sky than a regular full moon.
2. Blue Moon – a term to describe the 2nd full moon in a calendar month. These events are relatively rare, happening approximately once ever 2 1/2 years.
3. The Super Blue Moon of 31 August 2023 – This was a unique convergence of of these two lunar phenomena, as on this night, the moon was at its closest point to Earth, and also the second full moon of the month!
The rarity of the Super Blue Moon is a celestial occurrence that won’t happen again for several years !
This picture of the Super Blue moon rising through the clouds was taken in Cape Town, South Africa on 31 August 2023.
