The journey from Johannesburg to Nossob Camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park covers approximately 1,150 kilometers and takes around 15 to 16 hours of driving time. This route passes through some remote areas, so it is advisable to plan your trip with rest stops and fuel stations in mind.
- Depart from Johannesburg:
- Start your journey on the N14 highway, heading west out of Johannesburg. Follow signs for Krugersdorp.
- Proceed on N14 to Upington:
- Continue on the N14 through Ventersdorp and Vryburg. The N14 is a major route that will take you directly to Upington.
- Arrive in Upington:
- Upington is a good place to rest, refuel, and stock up on supplies. It’s also the last major urban center before entering the more remote areas leading to the park.
- Upington to Twee Rivieren Gate:
- From Upington, take the R360 road north towards Askham.
- Continue through Askham and proceed to Twee Rivieren Rest Camp, which is the main entrance to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. This leg of the trip is approximately 260 kilometers and takes about 3.5 hours.
- Twee Rivieren to Nossob Camp:
- After entering the park at Twee Rivieren, follow the park’s internal roads to Nossob Camp.
- The distance from Twee Rivieren to Nossob Camp is about 160 kilometers and can take 3 to 4 hours, depending on road conditions and wildlife sightings. These roads are well-maintained gravel paths suitable for 4×4 vehicles.
Tips for the Journey
- Vehicle Preparation: A 4×4 vehicle is recommended due to the gravel and sometimes sandy roads within the park as some roads are accessible by 4×4 only.
- Fuel Stops: Ensure you have a full tank of fuel when leaving Upington, as fuel stations are sparse. Nossob Camp has a fuel station, but it’s good to confirm availability ahead of time.
- Supplies: Stock up on water, food, and other essentials in Upington, as options are limited once you enter the park.
